memorial day weekend

How was everyone’s long weekend? Memorial Day to me always seems to mark the unofficial start of summer, so we were pretty bummed that both Saturday and Sunday were cloudy, rainy and kind of cold. After an uneventful Saturday spent whining about the weather, we decided it was #sundayfunday or bust. That morning, we headed to Railcar for brunch, because three-day weekends demand day drinking. Bloody Mary’s have slowly been growing on me, and I really liked Railcar’s — it had a great smoky flavor. Our food was great, too; there was even “bread service” in the form of a croissant with butter. Yes please.

We spent the rest of Sunday morning and afternoon in a brunch coma, but recovered enough to mix up a pitcher of Strawberry Pimm’s Cups, which were super delicious and I’d highly recommend if you’re looking for a light and fruity summer cocktail (which should be everyone?). Fueled by our cocktails, we went on a closet clean out and organizing rampage and got rid of and donated tons of old magazines and clothes. Downsizing is my love language.

Once we’d finally worked up an appetite again, we made this Mango & Red Pepper Orzo Salad for dinner. It’s full of tons of spring and summer veggies, plus some mango and mint for sweetness, and chickpeas for protein. We skipped the dressing in the recipe and just used a goddess dressing we had in the fridge. A really great combo and a salad we’ll be making on repeat this summer. It’s held up well over the last few days, too, and made great lunch leftovers with some grilled chicken mixed in.

On Sunday we woke up and made coffee and had bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, which we picked up at Costco the day before. I’ve always enjoyed smoked salmon at restaurants but wasn’t sure how the quality of the Costco version would be — we were super impressed and will definitely buy it again as it makes for a great breakfast!

While we had breakfast, we baked a loaf of bread that had been proofing and rising since the night before. We used Jim Lahey’s no-knead method, letting it rise for about 15 hours, then forming it into a ball, and then letting it rise again for another 2 hours right before baking. It’s a foolproof method that just requires a little bit of planning ahead to pull off. I love how hands-off it is for how delicious the bread tastes. Now that I know how easy it is, we’ll definitely be making our own bread more often and experimenting with different additions to the dough.

Once our bread finished baking and we let it cool long enough to sneak a quick taste, we noticed the sun was coming out and decided to enjoy some time outside while it lasted. We headed out to Lake Zorinsky and walked/ran the loops around both sides of the lake, about 8 miles total. It was unexpectedly sunny the entire time and we did not wear sunscreen. I’ve been feeling pretty sad lately with all the clouds so the vitamin D and endorphins were great therapy. The trail itself was prettier than I remember it being the couple times we’ve been out there, and I think it’ll be a great place for some long runs during marathon training.

We were pretty hungry after our run so we made a quick stop at the store for burgers and pretzel buns and cooked those up for lunch once we got home. It’s also not officially summer until you have a giant watermelon taking up approximately one fourth of your fridge. Also, the Steigl Grapefruit Radler is everything.

We spent the rest of the afternoon doing yard work – we were able to get both the front and back yards mowed and raked and some weeds taken care of. Yard work is decidedly not my favorite part about being a homeowner, but it also feels so rewarding to have it done, and makes sitting outside on cool summer nights that much more appealing. We were able to get everything done in time to enjoy a couple more hours of warmth and sunshine outside while we read and had dessert.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!

Three years ago we packed up nearly everything we owned into exactly twenty boxes, weighed down our Corolla with clothes for a week and a few essentials, and drove halfway across the country, from Tucson to Omaha. It took a long time – a really long time – for this move to feel like anything remotely close to the right decision for our little family. That first year here brought some of the lowest lows and made us question why we’d left everything behind like we had – wonderful friends, stable jobs, 350 days of sunshine. But slowly but surely, things started to turn a corner. One by one, things have fallen into place – which is to say, we worked hard and were patient. New jobs that were the right fit for both of us. A house, a space that is all our own. New friendships. Things have been looking up for awhile now, and I’m so glad we stuck it out and that we’re here. I have no idea where life will take us, or if we’ll be here forever, but for now, it feels good to call this home.

second sundays

A couple Sundays ago we decided to ride our bikes a few miles down the street for the inaugural Blackstone Second Sundays. What I love about getting our long runs in (95% of the time) on Saturdays, as well as most of our errands done, is that Sunday truly does get to be a fun-day. Blackstone is a district about 2 miles from our house that’s being revitalized and is home to some of our favorite hangs, so when we heard they’d all be opening up on a Sunday afternoon with specials and tours, we were in.

No respectable Sunday begins without first being properly caffeinated, so our first stop was Archetype Coffee for an espresso (me), pourover (Kevin), and some perfect patio weather. Archetype is our go-to shop for coffee a couple times a week, and is where we almost always buy our beans for at-home, too. Always delicious coffee, great service, good jams on the record player, and a rotating selection of local pastries. (What more is there in life?)

storyboard005

We successfully avoided pastries at Archetype (hey, there’s a first time for everything) because as soon as the clock struck noon, we were biking a few blocks down to the Crescent Moon for beer donuts and breakfast beers. The Moon is a popular Omaha dive bar that also happens to have one of the best craft beer selections in the city and on this particular Sunday, also fresh-made beer donuts. We indulged in both, after which we were pretty hungry for real food that wasn’t sugar or caffeine or alcohol.

Our original plan was pizza for lunch, at a brand new by-the-slice place called Noli’s, but alas – despite the fact that we’d actually read about the Second Sundays event on their website – they weren’t open. We adapted and overcame and ended up at Corkscrew, a wine and cheese place just a block down, which is also fairly new and we hadn’t been to yet. They had – obviously – tons of wines, but impressively a good beer selection as well, but we went straight for the food – a cheese plate, in fact, that was really really good.

We purposely skipped drinking at Corkscrew so we could make our final stop at our home away from home, Scriptown Brewery. If you follow us on instagram, you already know that we’re basically always here – it’s on our way home from my bus stop, so it’s too easy not to go. For Second Sunday, they were offering free tours, so we got to hear a little bit about how the brewery got started and what’s coming down the pipeline.

All around, a Sunday funday well spent. Looking forward to more of these this summer in our new favorite neighborhood.

the one where the power went out.

_______snomaha_______

This past weekend we finally had our first big winter snowstorm this year. I always say that if it’s going to be so damn cold, it might as well snow a whole bunch and be pretty. Ideally this should happen on a weeknight so we get a true snow day, but we’ll take what we can get. On Sunday we woke up to a gorgeous winter wonderland and were so excited for the day. Coffee. Sledding. Pajamas. More coffee. Superbowl. Brisket. Our excitement quickly came to a screeching halt when I went to turn on the bathroom light…nothing. A glance at the clocks on the oven and microwave confirmed my suspicions – power was out. The temperature inside was 60 and dropping. Oh hell no. Didn’t the winter gods know about our plans for a Good Wife marathon? Didn’t they know that our phones were only charged to a collective 50%? That we need coffee to function? DIDN’T THEY KNOW THAT WE HAD A 5-LB BRISKET THAT I SPENT $40 ON TO BRAISE?

Despite my internal first-world-problems freak out, we tried to stay calm and as my mom would say, adapt and overcome. We moved a few things, including the brisket, into the freezer where it was still pretty cold. I posted a dramatic Facebook status. Friends and family offered for us to come over and get warm. Kevin went to check on our elderly next-door neighbors who don’t have a cell phone. We decided we’d eat leftover pizza for breakfast and a banana for lunch and patted ourselves on the back for aging some beer in our makeshift basement cellar. We’d be needing that.

We got back in bed and I thought, maybe this won’t be so bad. Thirty seconds later, this was so bad. I couldn’t stop thinking about everything in the fridge. My feet were cold. I’m always wishing I had more time to read, but suddenly the thought of having to read all day seemed horrible.

But we’d waited months for this snow and I was determined not to let this glitch get in the way of our snow day. I think it was like 8:05am and still negative degrees when I decided to tell Kevin to get dressed, we’re going sledding. We put on approximately 18 layers of clothing, grabbed the disc sleds I’d bought the day before, and headed out.

We walked the few blocks up to the middle school with the best hill – the same hill my dad and aunt grew up sledding on – and went for it. Despite the fact that we were sledding against the wind and somehow managed to forget a layer to cover our faces and it took 5 minutes to thaw out after every run, we had a blast. I packed my phone in a ziploc bag and we took videos of each other. (Editing out the curse words might be too difficult, so they’re not going public). In true Hollyanne and Kevin fashion, we even snuck in a selfie or two.

On our way back, we sledded down little hills here and there most of the way home. I felt 110% happier. Maybe this day won’t be so bad after all. I’ll finally finish my book. We’ll play Monopoly. We won’t eat a million calories.

I went inside to grab the shovel so we could start working on the driveway, and the first thing I noticed was that the heater had kicked on. CAN IT BE? Flipping a switch in the kitchen confirmed that our power had indeed come back on. Apparently all it took was for us to get over ourselves and go out and get a better attitude (and some very hardworking power company crews). Life is funny that way.

We got our happy snow day after all. We got to chat with a few of our neighbors while we all cleared our driveways, one of which let us borrow his much bigger shovel after he had finished. (Right afterwards, he came outside to announce, and I quote, “Praise the Lord, church is cancelled!” We LOL’ed a lot). We got to have our coffee and make our brisket and we got to have our Good Wife marathon. And what do you know, we played Monopoly anyways.

blatt + baseball.

last friday we scored some last minute tickets to the creighton / nebraska baseball game, so we went to blatt beer & table (their upper patio overlooks the stadium) for beers and pretzel bites beforehand. we had fantastic seats, 10 rows back behind home plate, the weather was perfect (after k lent me his sweatshirt) and creighton won! i’m so happy the weather is finally staying warmer and the days are getting longer…i’m definitely starting to smell summer (and humidity) in our midwest air.

what did you all do last weekend?
